NYS Department of Transportation Summer Youth Program

The NYS Department of Transportation has announced a new summer youth program, aimed at graduating seniors. This will be a paid summer job, with the hopes of appointing them permanently into state service as a Highway Maintenance Worker (HMW) in the fall.

HMWs are critical to the maintenance of our roadways and bridges in the summer, and keeping the roads clear in the winter. DOT wants to provide interested graduates with hands on experience in road maintenance (flagging, culvert maintenance, patching potholes, etc.) and a mentorship by working directly with professional DOT staff. If a student obtains their CDL, they could be permanently appointed, and to a higher level of pay! Permanent appointment comes with a list of benefits such as tuition reimbursement, health, vision, dental and a retirement plan, among many others.

High school graduates must be 18 years old at the time of appointment, and pass a physical/drug test. They will be paid $15.02/hour, for full time work.
