The Workforce Development Board, Herkimer, Madison, and Oneida Counties, Inc. (WDB HMO), DBA Working Solutions, is part of the Public Workforce System, a network of federal, state, and local offices that support economic expansion and develop the talent of the nation’s workforce.

Internship – Entry-Level Barrel Making

Interested in learning a new skill? Ready for a new opportunity to do something unique and different? Adirondack Barrel Cooperage makes premium American white oak spirit and wine barrels. They have partnered with the Workforce Development Institute of New York to create a paid Internship to introduce interested candidates to the art of barrel making (coopering). Full-time employment opportunity available upon successful completion of the Internship program.

Term: 8 to 10 weeks (320 hours)

Rate of Pay: $15.00 per hour

Learning Experiences may include:

  • Set up, operate, and tend drill presses, lathes, sanders, planers, and bandsaws.

  • Use automated machinery, such as computerized numerical control (CNC) machines.

  • Operate specialized pieces of woodworking machinery.

  • Use of hand tools.

  • Perform work in a production/manufacturing facility following safety rules.

  • Stave processing, preparation, and grading.

  • Barrel head preparation.

  • Verify dimensions using caliper or rule.

  • Sand barrels using sander machine, hand sanders and sandpaper.

  • Barrel testing.

  • Use of barrel wrapping machine and palletize barrels for shipment.

  • Clean production/work areas.

Compatible Experience/Background:

  • Carpentry/Construction

  • Furniture or Cabinetry Assembly

  • Manufacturing

  • Woodworking

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age.

  • Must have reliable transportation.

  • Must be able to lift 100 lbs.

  • Availability to work Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
